An antique Chinese rosewood square side table or stand. It probably dates from the end of the Qing dynasty or the early Republic period, around 1900–1930. It's a really useful size, too.
The square top has a mitred frame with an inset floating panel and a rounded moulded edge. Below it, a pierced apron carved with ruyi cloud scrolls and small ball spacers runs around all four sides. The legs have a stepped, knuckled profile and end in scrolled hoof feet.
It's made with traditional pegged mortise-and-tenon joinery, without screws or glue. Small inset plates sit at the top corners.
Underneath there's a cross brace, old Chinese characters written in white, and the remains of an old paper label with handwritten numbers. They're nice little signs of its age and history.
Lovely as a lamp table, plant or vase stand, or a side table beside a chair or sofa.
Condition: Good antique condition, solid and stable with no wobble, and all original, with wear consistent with age. There is surface wear to the finish, with small marks and light scratches to the top. One edge of the top panel shows a small shrinkage gap against the frame, which is normal for floating-panel construction.
