Coopered from narrow staves and bound with twisted wire bands, this Chinese rice bucket swells generously above a flared foot. A fixed, arched wooden handle spans the mouth, with a metal ring at its centre for lifting or hanging.
The red lacquer has worn through to black in places, along the bands and on the high points, giving it the soft, layered surface that only comes with age and use. Buckets like this were made for carrying and storing rice, and were often among the household goods given at a wedding. Today it makes a handsome log or magazine holder, or a cachepot for a large plant.
Chinese, probably early 20th century.
Condition: Good, honest condition for its age. Wear to the lacquer with black showing through, scratches and small marks consistent with use. Some old splits between the staves, consolidated. Please see the photos.
