A very large pair of painted cast stone lion sculptures, inspired by the original marble creations of Antonio Canova (1757-1822) for Pope Clement XIII's tomb in St. Peter's Basilica. Lions are known for their strength and confidence, and are often depicted as doorway sentinels. These impressive lions are crafted in a reclining position, exuding a sense of calm strength and majesty, painted/finished in a white or off-white color, with flaking in parts. These lions reflect the neoclassical style championed by Canova, blending realistic animal forms with an idealized, almost statuesque dignity.
The lion sculptures show signs of weathering or age, with some discoloration, flaking and minor chips, particularly around the base and paws, hindquarters and tail area. This patina adds to their antique charm and suggests they may have been exposed to the elements, possibly as garden or architectural ornaments.
