French Henri II Ash Bed, Attributed to Roudillon
A substantial French Henri II style bed in ash, with a strong architectural composition.
The tall headboard is centred by an arched pediment with circular medallion detail, echoed across the footboard. Turned posts, urn-shaped finials, recessed panels and repeated carved linear decoration give the bed a particularly disciplined architectural character.
The ash has a lively, pronounced grain which forms an important part of the design.
The bed is attributed to Roudillon, based on its architectural language and construction, although no maker’s mark or documentary model reference has been identified.
