A tall late Victorian hall stand, or coat tree, in solid mahogany, made in England around 1870–1890.

A square central column rises to a stepped lunette crest with concentric reeded rings. Two tiers of shaped S-scroll arms branch from the column, each fitted with turned mushroom-head pegs – eight pegs in all for hats and coats. Between the tiers sits a circular mirror in a moulded mahogany frame, its old plate showing gentle age to the silvering.

At waist height, 80cm from the floor, is a neat hinged lift-lid glove box with moulded edges, flanked by curved metal rests for walking sticks and umbrellas. Below, a pierced fretwork panel with scrolling foliate and anthemion decoration supports the box. It stands on a rectangular plinth base fitted with one long zinc drip tray, raised on small bun feet.

This tree form, with scrolled arms branching around a mirrored column, was a standard British hallway pattern of the 1870s and 1880s, and appears in trade catalogues of the period.

A classic Victorian hallway piece, with plenty of hanging space on a slim footprint, only 28cm deep.

Condition: Good antique condition with honest wear. There are age-related splits to the glove box sides and small veneer losses, as you'd expect. The arms are firm, with old repairs to the rear joints. The original long zinc drip tray is free of rust. The circular plate has heavy foxing, which gives it a lovely aged, smoky look. No maker's mark.
